Aqu\u00ed entre todos eso es lo que hablamos. Cuando llegamos al colegio, nos voltean la pel\u00edcula. Todas las clases son en espa\u00f1ol y vuelves a casa dici\u00e9ndoles a tus papas que te expliquen todo nuevamente, pero en ingl\u00e9s. Entonces te das cuenta que alejan tu cultura de la educaci\u00f3n y que adem\u00e1s de que las clases son en espa\u00f1ol. Est\u00e1 totalmente prohibido que un profesor intente hacer las clases en ingl\u00e9s porque podr\u00eda ser despedido.<\/p>\n<p>La mejor hora siempre es el recreo donde realmente puedes ser t\u00fa, el chico isle\u00f1o de Providencia, que habla su lengua, utilizando toda la expresi\u00f3n corporal que acompa\u00f1a el habla creol.<\/p>\n<p>El cambio que me gustar\u00eda ver en la escuela no se trata de ignorar el espa\u00f1ol, sino de permitir el biling\u00fcismo y que haya libertad para crecer siendo quienes somos, que podamos recurrir a otras oportunidades en el exterior sin necesidad de hacer un examen TOFL por ejemplo, llegar a hacer la cara visible del pa\u00eds ante todo el Caribe angl\u00f3fono.<\/p>\n<p>Que en el colegio nos ense\u00f1en nuestra historia, sobre la naci\u00f3n creole, el Caribe, c\u00f3mo llegamos aqu\u00ed. La historia que nos pintan de Sim\u00f3n Bol\u00edvar y la independencia de Colombia poco tiene que ver con nuestro pasado. La emancipaci\u00f3n de las islas sucedi\u00f3 de forma pac\u00edfica y cedieron estas tierras a nuestros ancestros. Hay multitud de personas que trabajaron por <a href=\"https:\/\/zachary-jones.com\/zambombazo\/entrevista-elkin-robinson-come-round\/\">nuestra cultura<\/a> y sociedad que son de los que realmente nos deber\u00edan ense\u00f1ar en la escuela.\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>\u00bfC\u00f3mo ha cambiado la vida en la isla desde que era ni\u00f1o?<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\nTengo la sensaci\u00f3n que Providencia sigue siendo lo mismo y que el que he cambiado soy yo. Experimento algunos cambios en cuanto a la tecnolog\u00eda, que sin embargo aqu\u00ed no es exagerado. Es un lugar que te permite utilizar la tecnolog\u00eda con moderaci\u00f3n, pero sigue siendo el mismo sitio, donde tienes que inventarte la vida, donde hay mucho por hacer, mucha virginidad ecol\u00f3gica y muchas ra\u00edces para absorber.<\/p>\n<p>Aqu\u00ed a las 5 de la tarde cuando sale el ultimo avi\u00f3n, quedamos a las nuestras, solos bajo un cielo estrellado y un silencio de alabanza y meditaci\u00f3n. Sin embargo, vivimos bajo la constante amenaza de adaptar otras influencias de un mundo comercial, pero el pueblo ha sabido decir que no, pero no se sabe hasta cu\u00e1ndo.\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>\u00bfCu\u00e1les son tus esperanzas con respecto al futuro de Providencia?<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\nEl futuro que espero es que Providencia sea Providencia, que rompa el esquema del mundo habitual, que vivamos con energ\u00eda solar, siempre en familia, ser ejemplo de vida y cultura, que digan: &#8220;\u00bfConoc\u00e9is un pa\u00eds llamado Providencia?&#8221;. Pues no lo es, solo es una peque\u00f1a isla, pero con una mentalidad y una cultura que no tiene barreras en sus costas, sino atravesando su mar de siete colores que lo conectan con el mundo. But what language are classes in?<\/li>\n<li>What history lessons would Elkin like to be taught?<\/li>\n<li>What Old Providence values does Elkin emphasize?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Interview with Elkin Robinson about &#8220;Creole Vibration&#8221;<\/h4>\n<p><em>On Twitter you mentioned that the situation described in &#8220;Creole Vibration&#8221; is the reality of your youth and that of many children today. What changes would you like to see in schools?<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\nMy first language is English creole, 90% English, 5% African and the other 5% Dutch. That is what we all speak here among ourselves. When we get to school, they flip the script. All the classes are in Spanish and then you go back home telling your parents to explain everything to you over again, but in English. So you realize that they distance your culture from education and furthermore the classes are in Spanish. It is completely forbidden for a teacher to try to teach classes in English because he could be fired.<\/p>\n<p>The best time of day is always break time where you can really be yourself, the island boy from Old Providence, that speaks his language, using all the body language that goes along with Creole speech.<\/p>\n<p>The change that I would like to see in school doesn&#8217;t have to do with overlooking Spanish but rather permitting bilingualism and that there be freedom to grow, to be who we are, so that we can be able to reach for other opportunities abroad without the need to take a TOFL exam, for example, making the face of the country visible to all the English-speaking Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p>I would also like to see our history taught in school, about the Creole nation, the Caribbean, how we got here. The history that they paint for us of Sim\u00f3n Bol\u00edvar and the independence of Colombia has little to do with our past. The emancipation of the islands occurred peacefully and these lands were handed over to our ancestors. There are many people that worked for <a href=\"https:\/\/zachary-jones.com\/zambombazo\/entrevista-elkin-robinson-come-round\/\">our culture<\/a> and society and these are the ones that we should be taught about in school.\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>How has life on the island changed since you were a child?<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\nI have the feeling that Old Providence is still the same and it is I who have changed. I haved experienced some changes with regard to technology, but even that is not too exaggerated here. It is a place that allows you to use technology in moderation, but it is still the same place, where you have to make life up as you go, where there is a lot to do, a lot of pristine natural resources and lots of roots to take in.<\/p>\n<p>Here at 5 o&#8217;clock in the afternoon when the last plane leaves, we are on our own, alone under a starry sky with a silence of praise and meditation. However, we live under the constant threat of conforming to other influences from a commercial world, but the people have known how to say no, but it is unknown for how long.\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>What are your hopes with regard to the future of Old Providence?<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\nThe future that I hope for is that Old Providence stays Old Providence, that it breaks from the usual pattern of the world, that we live with solar energy, always as a family, being an example of life and culture to others so that they say, &#8220;Do you know a country called Old Providence?&#8221; Because it isn&#8217;t like that, it&#8217;s just a small island, but with a mentality and a culture that is not bound to its coasts, but crosses its sea of seven colors connecting it to the world. I want a future for Old Providence that allows our children to be able to live with all the beauty that we do and to know that all of Old Providence is and always has been a family.\n<\/ul>\n<h4>After reading&#8230;<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Are there students in your community that speak one language at home but must speak another at school?
