Day off, gallon of shrimp, BBQ, Betsy

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Yesterday morning I decided to take off Friday to hang out with Betsy. It was great! Thursday night we started our weekend by going shrimping! We went over to Jekyll Island after dark when the shrimp are out like crazy. We were dragging our net through the water one time, for instance, and they were literally jumping out of the water and hitting us in the face! We pulled in a gallon worth of shrimp by the time that we wore ourselves out completely. We were way too worn out from shrimpin’ to do anything with them right then, but we were still starving from all the hard work, so I fired up the grill with some hot dogs and Betsy made some mac and cheese. We ate and then fell asleep really hard.

This morning we woke up late and walked around the beach together, out to the sand bar, which was pretty. Then we went to get some BBQ at Southern Soul and then we just bummed around together. Taking the day off was very enjoyable! Haven’t taken off in forever just for enjoyment.

I like hanging out with Betsy. She is cool.

Very full, fun day

Yesterday Betsy and I had a very full day including service, crabbing, a nap, Chik-Fil-A nuggets, seining (with our brand new net) in the rain, and watching a few cool shows.

Lost, breakfast, crabbing, iCarly

Egh…woke up with bad news for Betsy and me, our tummies hurt!  We’re taking care of each other, though.

Yesterday we did lots of things.  First we woke up to go to the new service location.  We got directions from a person, but we got completely confused.  The streets in Brunswick are a grid system but the streets don’t always connect.  You’ll come to a dead-end on 3rd ave for instance and you’ll think, “We’ll that must be the end of that street”, but then it will pick up again somewhere else that is unconnected to the other part.  We drove around for about an hour trying to find the place!  We had to stop to get gas, in fact.  That was stressful and not fun.  Oh well, we’ll try again next time.

At around 10:30, when we were absolutely positive that we no one would be there even if we found it, we gave up and went to get breakfast at our favorite breakfast place back on the island, The Sand Castle.  Great buffet like normal.  A bunch of tourists asking to get by us to “go put their name on the list”.  I told them that there was no list, that they just had to wait for the next table to open up, but they didn’t believe me.  They’d go in, mill around, and come back out and say, “Yep, no list.”

After breakfast, we stopped in to the bait shop to buy a new net, cause I broke the old one.

Then we took a nap cause we were tired from all that getting lost.

Going to the beach

Going to the beach

When we woke up, it was nearing low tide, so we packed up our gear and headed to the beach.  Recently we’ve been putting our gear through the ringer with so much use!  Our two crab lines got all messed up last time, so we had to throw them out.  So, this time, as we got ready to go, we were like, “Oh no, we don’t have any lines!”  So we decided to see if we could make some ourselves!  I got some thin rope and Betsy got some hangers and we formed it into some makeshift crab lines.  They were much sturdier than the ones you buy in the store.  We hooked some sinkers on them and off we went!

We started crabbing, but it wasn’t a good start.  I got some sunblock in my eye, and it was driving me crazy.  And right then some people came up and we getting all in our way, asking tons of questions and walking in the water trying to see over my shoulder.  All the while, I could barely see cause of the sunblock and I was trying to catch a crab at the same time!  I caught 2 on our first try, but then the people were all in my way so I got irritated and was like, “Can I put it in the bucket please?”  They left after that.  haha.

Then my eye was still driving me crazy, so I just went swimming in the ocean underwater for a bit to rinse it out.  That worked a bit.  After that, it was crab central!  We caught 2 crabs on nearly every cast.  The new net was definitely working.  It has a much wider mouth, so we could catch multiple crabs at once.  Plus, our new makeshift lines were way better too, because they were heavier and the waves didn’t toss them around as much.  All that led to one of our biggest hauls yet!  It was so much fun.

We only stopped when…guess what…I broke the new net!  haha.  I guess they just don’t make them for Radagast the Crab Tamer.  We’ll have to buy a professional one or something if we keep this up.  No more amateur nets.

We came back home with our bucket full to the brim and were so hungry.  So I grilled up some hotdogs and hamburgers for us while the crabs sat on ice in the sink.  Here are the crabs right before we iced them down:

Then we boiled them up with some seasoning in all the pots that we own. Afterwards we watch an iCarly waiting for the to cool down. Yes, iCarly. Got hooked on it at the assembly hotel room looking for SpongeBob. iCarly is surprisingly funny and innocent. Mixed up with some SpongeBob, some great tv! Plus it’s got Tuvok as the principal.

I can’t wait to have some awesome crab cakes, or some crab bisque, or crab monica, or some other crab dish…..mmmm….

Betsy is adorable. Have I blogged that lately? Also, she is awesome cook and crabbing partner.

Well, this post goes out to Dad, cause he really wanted to read a new post! Love and miss you!

Exciting day!

Today was a crazy day at the beach! We had fun crabbing (caught about 5) – so much fun, in fact, that we broke our net! Zachary went to snag a crab and SNAP! the net broke in half. But guess what! He still caught the crab! It was quite an amazing feat. Here’s a picture of our broken net:

We’re going to buy a better one now that we know how much we use it.

Have we told you about the awesome grill that S and C got us? We’ve been using it nearly every day. I forgot how much I missed having a grill. Zachary is the grilling master – he made us some pork steaks the other day that were extraordinary! Here’s our broken net up against our awesome grill:

Thank you SO much S and C!

As we were walking back home after crabbing, Zachary pointed and said, “There’s a cat on the beach!”. There was a tiny kitten on the beach! He was the cutest little thing, playing with a stick under one of the wooden walkways off of the beach. We wondered where he belonged and lured him over to us to see him better. After some deliberation, we decided to bring him home and put up some signs to see if anyone had lost him. We tentatively named him Simon Playa. (Simon for St Simons Island and Playa for beach in Spanish) Walking down the road to put up the signs, we see a sign that says: “Lost cat. Black with white chest and paws.” Happy that we had found someone’s lost kitty, we contacted the grateful owner and walked him over to his home. Turns out his real name is Neptune and he loves to follow his owner to the beach – except this time he got lost. He’s a cute kitty, as you can see below, and now we know where he belongs if we ever see him on the beach again!
