ZTV – Catching blue crabs with Betsy!
Saturday, May 30th, 2009Betsy and I had one of the best Fridays ever last night! We were going to go see Terminator, but then we walked to the beach and the weather seemed to be calling us. It was about 6:30pm, so the sun was lower in the sky and the tide was out. The beach had a lot of people on it for a Friday night, but everything was really calm, warm but windy. So, we changed plans all of a sudden and decided to go crabbing. We rushed home, got our gear and went out crabbing right off of the beach.
It is such a simple method too. We just put a chicken back on a string and throw it a little out into the water. Then we wait for a tiny little tug on the line and then Betsy slowly, slowly pulls it in. I stand in the water next to the string with a net and when the crab follows the chicken all the way up to me, I net it!!! It is so exciting and fun.
We also have a crab trab tied to a milk jug that we wade out and put in the water. We check that every so often too. One time I pulled it up and caught two at once last night!
But the string was by far the most productive and fun. We would toss it out, reel it in, net it, put it in the bucket and do it all over again 2 minutes later. That’s how fast we were pulling them in. We caught so many that our bucket filled up!
Then we came back the house, boiled them up with some Bay Seasoning and ate them! It was a feast! The wonderful product of a crazy and entertaining Friday night. We stood so long for a bit cleaning them and getting the meat out that our legs got tired and then we fell asleep…
