The Hoosiers – Trick to Life
I’ve already listened to this album 3 or 4 times and I just got it yesterday. An album hasn’t caught me like that for a long time. I first found out about the band when I saw their video for “Goodbye Mr. A” online. The song was instantly catchy, accompanied by a humorous little video. But, it was his voice that caught me, high but robust, punctuating the song at various points with high notes.
The album is well-crafted, with plenty of catchy hooks, but full of passion and talent too. I was bopping my head and singing along after only a few listens. His voice plays a prominent role, which I like. Later I went and read their Wikipedia article, and it mentioned that the band lists Jeff Buckley (among others) as an influence. I can hear that, but his work is much happier in tone and by no means derivative.
Now off to listen to the album again.
(He’s got a great stage presence and sense of humor too. I recently saw him on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, a British Pop Quiz Panel show. By the way, he’s the guy with the pink tie and sports coat on Bill Bailey’s team.)
