X-Men a hair too short

Monday, May 29th, 2006

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)Bets and I recently saw X-Men: The Last Stand and we’re thoroughly entertained. So much so, in fact, that I wished it would have lasted longer, literally. Clocking in at only a bit over an hour and a half, I thought that it could have benefitted from a bit more time spent on some of the characters’ stories. Now, this is no complaint. I just could have watched a TWO and a half hour movie about the X-Men.

The movie both delighted and surprised me. Not to give anything away, but there were quite a number of things that I did not expect to happen in this one. I also enjoyed seeing the blurring of the ideological lines between the two sides. The enemies were made a bit more relatable (showing their “human” nature, so to speak, hehe).

Last day of school!

Friday, May 26th, 2006

Last Day of SchoolToday I completed the last day of school at DCHS!!! Overall, it was a pleasant work experience. Interestingly enough, although the classroom situation handed over to me 3 weeks from the end of the school was far from ideal, the colleagues I worked with made all the difference. I received support from both the other teachers within the department and the administration. That makes all the difference when situations get hairy. Although I think that my teaching was limited because of the late date as well as the time I had to devote to behavior, I did the best that I could and my efforts were appreciated.

So, now for a vacation! I’ll need it before I go back to GSU for the summer and then to my new job over at Chapel Hill. I hope to receive similar support and encouragement from my new colleagues there.

Past week of class successful

Sunday, May 21st, 2006

This last week has been successful. I established fairly good classroom management and I think that the students actually learned a few things. I’ve only had to “write up” a few. The TPR worked like a charm; From what I see, it is even more necessary with this age group than my college students. To be honest, I think that the words I taught with TPR are probably one of the only things that some of the students have learned in this short time, but at least it is something. It engages some of the students that wouldn’t get engaged otherwise.

This upcoming week, we will review for the final exams on Thursday and Friday. I’m going to prepare a PowerPoint to stay focused and organized. I hope that it goes well.

Nice Relaxing

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

Ah…tonight we had a nice relaxing night. We went to the Wal-mart over in Decatur for the first time. It was really nice, not packed or anything. I got some supplies for an art project at school and Betsy got a nice new washable bath mat for our feet in the bathroom.

Tonight Betsy is fixing shrimp ‘n grits for dinner! I can smell it now from the room….mmmmm…

Long-term Subbing

Saturday, May 13th, 2006

From now until the end of the year, I have the hardest type of teaching–subbing. After having been offered the job over at Chapel Hill, I got a call from the Language Director telling me of an immediate opening at Douglas County High School for a long-term sub to fill in for a teacher that would not be able to teach the rest of the year. So, after Guen lovingly let us stay at her place, I accepted and Betsy and me dashed out of here early last week.

The Board of Education expedited me through the paperwork and got me into the classroom by Wednesday. I was, naturally, quite nervous going in there as a sub only 2 weeks from the end of school. But, the three days last week went quite well with only a few problems. Hopefully the problems will lessen even more as the students get to know me a bit.

So, Betsy and I are in quite a weird situation. We’re in Douglas County and I’m teaching, but only for 2 more weeks. Then we are back in Atlanta until the end of July, then back to Douglas County for August. I guess it all works out, though. We’re away from our computers, so there may be a lapse in blog updates for a bit.
